Teaching critical reading of the Internet with Diigo, this event is for those interested in using social bookmarking and website annotation through diigo to help students actively and critically integrate online material into their courses. (Times EDT)

Delivered online in our virtual auditorium
Program Description

One challenge of teaching in the digital age is the omnipresence of online material that provides a context for every course.  How can you help students actively and critically integrate this material with what they learn in the classroom? This online interactive discussion will focus on diigo (http://www.diigo.com), a tool that combines social bookmarking with website annotation, such as highlights, private and public notes, and discussion groups. Gabriela Torres, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Wheaton College, will share how she uses diigo to teach net literacy and broaden the context for her courses.  Prof. Torres created a series of scaffolded assignments to help her students develop their use of diigo for finding, tagging, sharing, annotating and discussing online sources.  The session will also include an introduction and basic training in the features of diigo including, bookmarking, tagging, annotation, and groups.  Participants will leave with the knowledge they need to get started with diigo and with ideas for teaching critical reading of the internet.

The “Special Topics in Digital Teaching” series offers a sequence of interactive discussions showcasing how faculty are using digital technology for teaching and learning. The series is delivered online via NITLE’s multipoint interactive videoconferencing environment and is designed to help faculty make the transition from learning a new technology to using it effectively for teaching and learning. Participants are invited to join these lively discussions from the convenient location of their campus offices.
