From Planning to Practice (Part 1)
For those involved in using and assessing technology in teaching language, culture, international relations, and related subjects. Also for those developing curricula on the same. (Times EST)
Program Description
This three-part online conference continues an ongoing dialogue in the NITLE community on the use of technology in these areas by zeroing in on practical issues involved in planning, implementation, and assessment of programs, resources, and strategies. For example, what are the criteria for adopting a resource or program? How should resources be allocated? What are the techniques for effective implementation and assessment of progress toward stated objectives?
In this first session, participants will focus on the use of specific technologies to motivate students, assess their progress in language study, and facilitate cross-cultural interaction. Presenters and participants will also consider effective strategies for working with global partners in service learning.
The presenters for this November 4th session:
- Brett Boessen, Assistant Professor of Communication, Austin College
- Truett Cates, Professor of German, Director of Global Learning, Austin College
- Nancy Holden-Avard, Senior Lecturer in French, Mount Holyoke College
- Jean F. Coppola, Associate Professor, Pace University
- James Lawler, Professor, Pace University
- Andrea S. Taylor, Lecturer, Pace University
Over the course of the full conference, presentations and discussion will address the implementation of technology for teaching, learning, and program administrations in the three broad areas:
- Teaching Language and Culture
- Service Leaning in the Teaching of Language, Culture, and International Relations
- Study Abroad
Participants in this virtual conference will meet in three sessions on Wednesday, November 4; Monday, November 9; and Wednesday, November 11, 2009. All sessions will run from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern, and each will consist of short presentations followed by extended discussion.
