Electronic Books

March 8, 4:00pm - 5:00pm

For those who wish to explore electronic books, from uses and pilots of the ebook on liberal arts campuses to the emergent possibilities that new devices offer. (Times EDT)

Delivered online in our virtual auditorium

Electronic books are enjoying a renaissance this year. New ebook readers have appeared and more are arriving, including both hardware devices and software (applications and Web services). Participants in this session will explore campus ebook uses, including pedagogical practices and the roles of support departments. This session will first cover current liberal arts campus pilot projects, to share lessons learned. Emergent possibilities, based on new devices, current practice, and media studies will then be examined.

This interactive discussion is the second in this spring’s “Special Topics in Emerging Technologies” series. The series will focus on three technologies identified in The Horizon Report (2010 edition) as likely to be adopted in the next one to three years. Bryan Alexander, NITLE’s director of research, chaired the advisory board for this year’s Horizon Report, which is published annually by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). This year’s report describes six areas of emerging technology that will have significant impact on higher education in the next five years.
