Delivered online in our virtual auditorium

Web-based video is increasingly widespread as a communications medium. Digital camera are more affordable and easier to use than ever. Given these conditions, faculty are increasingly seeing the potential of assignments incorporating the creation of video into their classes. As a result, instructional technologists are increasingly called on to develop effective practices for working with faculty and students as they use these powerful and engaging technologies for teaching and learning.

This fall, Skidmore College and Colgate University carried out curricular video projects in several classes. At Skidmore, Flip video cameras belonging to the IT organization were made available to students in several classes, including first-year seminars in environmental studies, travel writing, and American studies. At Colgate, students in a sociology class developed digital stories about the lives of elders in their local community. Kelly Dempsey-Little and Ben Harwood, Skidmore instructional technologists, and Ray Nardelli, manager of digital media at Colgate, will discuss their campuses’ recent projects and share what they learned about supporting faculty use of curricular video. Topics will include project origin and pre-planning, collaboration with faculty and with academic support colleagues, provision for student work time and support, and project evaluation and assessment.
