Jo Ellen leads NITLE, setting strategic direction and operational priorities so it can deliver the greatest possible value to participants. Working closely with campus and higher education leadership, she identifies opportunities for NITLE programming to advance the values and interests of liberal education. Jo Ellen’s work connects NITLE with important partners, including the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Ithaka, and other Ithaka affiliates, and marshals support for NITLE’s initiatives and operations. She also represents NITLE and the interests of liberal arts colleges in many higher education, technology, and external contexts.
Currently NITLE’s Executive Director, Jo Ellen has served liberal arts colleges for many years: as president of the Great Lakes Colleges Association (in which role she oversaw the creation of the Midwest Instructional Technology Center and served as a member of Project 2001’s advisory Board) and before that as a faculty member and associate dean at Bryn Mawr College. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania (PhD, English) and at Bryn Mawr (AB, English), she has published on George Eliot, the teaching of composition, and collaboration in higher education.
