(14 program units. Liaisons' deadline: Monday, March 3, 2008)

Level

Appropriate for all levels of experience

Description

Since 9/11, many U.S. colleges have moved to internationalize curricula in an effort to ensure that students better understand cultures across the globe, particularly those of the Middle East and the Islamic world. At smaller institutions where faculty are called upon to teach a wide range of courses, individual faculty members find themselves developing curricula in Middle Eastern and Islamic studies and recognizing a need for additional professional development. For institutions, recruiting and retaining faculty members to teach Middle Eastern and Islamic studies may be an issue as colleges compete with research institutions, think tanks, and other liberal arts colleges in a field where academics and professionals with expertise in the Middle East are very much in demand. Participants in this seminar will have the opportunity to become involved in professional communities that address both needs.

Seminar participants will begin or continue interdisciplinary and inter-campus collaborative work dealing with borders, defined in their broadest sense, and those who move or are moved across them. Participants may consider such topics as emigration, immigration, refugees, exile, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, occupation, and others. In addition, participants will learn about specific tools and digital environments--primarily publicly accessible web-based tools--that they can use to develop and sustain an inter-institutional professional community that enriches teaching and learning on their home campuses.

Applications may be submitted individually or as part of teams including a faculty member and an instructional technologist or librarian. Both first-time applicants and prior participants should apply.
