(7 program units. Liaisons' deadline: November 1, 2007)

Level

Appropriate for all levels of experience

Prerequisites

Knowledge about and experience in the teaching of writing in any discipline and/or an understanding of the support of this work will be useful for participation. Also useful: an interest in and awareness of the impact of digital technologies on this enterprise.

Description

Given writing’s central role in the teaching of critical thinking—particularly on liberal arts campuses—a consideration of the impact of interactive approaches to writing enabled by technology is vital. Social software, with its emphasis on collective and collaborative writing online, has had significant impact on the context in which students learn to write and on the process itself. Participants will consider how emerging technologies are influencing teaching and learning contexts such as the first-year seminar and core curriculum and what this influence means for the writing – critical thinking connection. Participants will specifically consider how collective, collaborative writing forms enabled by social software change the context and process of learning to write in the academy. Participants will strengthen their understanding of how to integrate new interactive technologies into their teaching practices and/or other campus work in ways that support the goals of liberal education.
