Upcoming Events - Podcasting for the Liberal Arts Classroom

May 21, 2008 , 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA

Brief Introduction

For faculty, instructional and information technology staff, and librarians at Occidental College and other participating colleges who are interested in an introduction to podcasting from both technological and pedagogical perspectives. Software: Audacity. (5 program units. Liaisons' deadline: Friday, April 11, 2008)

Level

Appropriate for all levels of experience

Description

Podcasts make audio files available anytime, anywhere. Instructors use them to move content, presentations, and lectures out of the classroom; students use them to publish academic projects; and colleges use them to make information available to the campus community. All of these approaches connect members of a campus community with each other and the larger world of teaching, research, and learning.

In this workshop, participants will find out about podcasting on both the pedagogical and technical levels. Participants will learn how to find, subscribe to, play, create, and share podcasts. They will also review audio recording hardware options, basic audio recording, and mixing delivery options (compression, hosting, etc.), and will explore podcasting’s connections with social software. Participants will engage in hands-on practice using Audacity. After this workshop, participants—both as consumers and producers—will be able to leverage podcasting’s unique ability to distribute repeatable content to enhance teaching and learning on the liberal arts campus.

This workshop is available through NITLE's Workshops-to-Go program, which delivers professional development opportunities for faculty and academic support staff directly to participating campuses. Workshops-to-Go focus on the effective integration of technology into teaching and learning. Contact your campus liaison to explore options for bringing a Workshop-to-Go to your campus. Liaisons may order Workshops-to-Go by contacting Rebecca Davis.
