Appropriate for all levels of experience

Description

Digital technology is increasingly being used to expand the classroom in both space and time. While asynchronous communication has become the hallmark of distance education, real-time collaboration technologies support the close, personal interaction privileged by residential liberal arts colleges. Such technologies allow campuses to maintain their learning communities, while also connecting those communities to expertise and resources beyond the classroom. Some examples:

Conference participants will explore the impact that real-time collaboration technologies can have on the liberal arts campus, considering such questions as these:

Participants will discuss the curricular possibilities of mobile devices, social presence tools such as Twitter, instant messaging, remote instrumentation, virtual worlds such as Second Life, Internet2, and multipoint interactive videoconferencing. Participants will leave the conference with ideas for using a variety of real-time collaboration technologies in pedagogically sound ways on their own campuses.
